Low-Signature Drone Detection: Why Sensor Fusion Needs Evidence and Oversight
Low-signature drones can create uncertainty for public C-UAS and industrial low-altitude safety programmes. Sensor fusion is best understood not as a promise of certainty, but as a project-level way to compare independent observations, document uncertainty, and support accountable human review within lawful boundaries.
INFORMATION & PROJECT-GOVERNANCE CONTEXT / CONCEPTUAL SCENE
Put technology questions back into an authorised, reviewable, and verifiable project context.
This conceptual scene helps explain conditional information, protected services, human review, and written validation. It is not a deployment or field-outcome claim.
BLOG SUMMARY
A governed evidence picture, not an automatic answer
A credible fusion project brings together appropriately authorised data sources, common time and context, and written rules for confidence, privacy, retention, and review. The goal is a defensible evidence picture for safety decisions—not an operating recipe, intervention mechanism, or guarantee that any technology will detect a particular aircraft or condition.

PROJECT QUESTION / 01
1. Define the decision before discussing the sensor
Start with the safety or assurance question the project must answer, such as whether an unusual observation merits documented human review. Keep the question bounded by authorisation, protected services, aviation responsibilities, and the difference between an observation, an identity claim, and a response decision. A project brief should explicitly state what it will not decide.
CONTEXT & UNCERTAINTY / 02
2. Combine evidence without disguising uncertainty
Fusion can make several observations easier to compare, but agreement is not proof and disagreement is not failure. Require records of source provenance, time context, data quality, missing information, and unresolved alternatives in language that reviewers can challenge. Avoid treating a combined output as a performance guarantee or as a substitute for qualified judgement.
PROTECTION & COMPLIANCE / 03
3. Build privacy and compliance into the evidence model
Public or industrial settings may involve people, vehicles, communications, or protected operational information. Define a privacy boundary, lawful purpose, access controls, retention limits, and escalation to the responsible authority before collecting or correlating data. Include EMC, aviation, occupational safety, and other applicable compliance reviews; do not assume a technically plausible integration is permitted.
GOVERNANCE & VALIDATION / 04
4. Validate the project in writing and keep humans accountable
Validation should be written, reviewable, and proportionate to the claimed use. Record assumptions, test conditions, known blind spots as governance questions, failure modes, human-review responsibilities, change control, and acceptance criteria approved by the relevant stakeholders. Any future site decision should depend on that evidence and authorisation, not on a generic guide or an unverified supplier claim.
TECHNICAL & COMPLIANCE BOUNDARY / 05
This guide is an educational project reference—not an operating, deployment, integration, or performance instruction.
01Availability and interpretation of acoustic, RF, radar, EO/IR, visual, and other information depend on site conditions, environment, data quality, protected services, permissions, privacy, and accountable review. This page does not promise detection, identification, classification, location assessment, tracking, availability, safety, non-interference, or risk outcomes.
02Any equipment, interface, data handling, industrial-system connection, spectrum-related arrangement, aviation coordination, or later project decision requires appropriate authority, engineering review, qualified personnel, and written scope.
03The public guide does not provide target selection, sensor positioning, thresholds, algorithms, execution sequences, signal control, interference, navigation manipulation, or response methods.
