C-UAS Coverage as an Evidence Boundary: RF-Connected and RF-Silent UAVs
A public project reference for discussing how different information conditions affect a C-UAS assurance case—without prescribing sensor placement, detection methods, response, or site operations.
INFORMATION & PROJECT-GOVERNANCE CONTEXT / CONCEPTUAL SCENE
Put technology questions back into an authorised, reviewable, and verifiable project context.
This conceptual scene helps explain conditional information, protected services, human review, and written validation. It is not a deployment or field-outcome claim.
BLOG SUMMARY
Treat coverage as a governed question, not a technology promise
RF-connected and RF-silent are useful planning labels, not proof of what any device can observe. A responsible project defines the safety objective, protected services, authorised evidence, privacy boundary, accountable human review, and written validation needed before any procurement or deployment decision. This guide keeps the conversation at requirements and assurance level.

PROJECT QUESTION / 01
Start with the assurance question
Describe the public-safety or industrial assurance objective in bounded terms: what decision must be supported, which areas or protected services are in scope, and what uncertainty must remain visible. “RF-connected” and “RF-silent” should be treated as information conditions to validate, not as labels that guarantee identification, coverage, or suitability. Keep the project brief free of assumptions about aircraft type, environment, terrain, or operating scenario.
CONTEXT & UNCERTAINTY / 02
Set authority, privacy, and accountability first
Before comparing sensing options, document legal authority, aviation and site responsibilities, protected services, data minimisation, retention, access control, and a clear privacy boundary. Define accountable human review and escalation ownership at the governance level, while excluding radio control, interference, navigation manipulation, target selection, and response instructions from this educational reference. Any third-party, employee, visitor, or communications data needs an explicit lawful and proportionate basis.
PROTECTION & COMPLIANCE / 03
Evaluate complementary evidence without prescribing a layout
A multi-sensor concept may be discussed as an evidence framework spanning, for example, passive acoustic and analytic RF information, alongside other appropriately authorised sources. The project question is whether each source has a documented purpose, known limitations, compatible time and data governance, and a safe way to represent disagreement or missing information. Do not infer signatures, thresholds, algorithms, spacing, blind-spot remedies, or performance from the category name; require supplier-neutral technical and compliance evidence instead.
GOVERNANCE & VALIDATION / 04
Make validation, EMC, and aviation review contractual
Require written validation criteria, test boundaries, uncertainty reporting, acceptance records, and change control before treating a concept as project-ready. Include electromagnetic compatibility, radio-spectrum permissions, aviation coordination, occupational and public safety offsets, cybersecurity, records management, and independent review where applicable. A defensible conclusion is limited to the evidence actually documented for the authorised context; it is not a guarantee that any technology detects, identifies, covers, protects, or suits a particular UAV, place, or condition.
TECHNICAL & COMPLIANCE BOUNDARY / 05
This guide is an educational project reference—not an operating, deployment, integration, or performance instruction.
01Availability and interpretation of acoustic, RF, radar, EO/IR, visual, and other information depend on site conditions, environment, data quality, protected services, permissions, privacy, and accountable review. This page does not promise detection, identification, classification, location assessment, tracking, availability, safety, non-interference, or risk outcomes.
02Any equipment, interface, data handling, industrial-system connection, spectrum-related arrangement, aviation coordination, or later project decision requires appropriate authority, engineering review, qualified personnel, and written scope.
03The public guide does not provide target selection, sensor positioning, thresholds, algorithms, execution sequences, signal control, interference, navigation manipulation, or response methods.
